Downloading and Installing R software:

For a Windows installation or a compile-it-yourself *nix installation, refer to:


For a clean installation on Linux, you can install R via a package manager (the package is 'r-base') by typing the following as root:

  • apt-get install r-base

In addition, many of the 600 or so packages from the comprehensive R archive network (CRAN) are also available through Linux package managers. All begin with the prefix 'r-cran'.




Online and In-Print Resources for Learning R :

The Berkeley CRAN maintains a page of Official R Manuals . Of particular note is the "Introduction to R".

Sadly, however, there is no online equivalent, in terms of quality, to consulting a textbook. If you are intent on learning R, we highly recommend you invest in one of these books (or a used version if one is available):
