Sanzhar Kettebekov presents: The New quantitative face of personas A novel methodology of integrating behavioral analytics into a User Experience cycle. Designed for online media that rely on display advertising . Employs behavioral profiles of the actual online audience to address drawbacks of traditional personas. Derived from standard web analytics data and augmented by custom research. Includes examples of precise targeting of audience segments for designing taxonomy, content layout, and presentation; also for developing audience and ad strategies. Covers implications of this approach for bridging the interdepartmental gaps between site’s user experience, product strategy, sales, and marketing. About the presenter: Dr. Kettebekov has over 13 years experience in behavioral and user experience research. His background includes establishing and directing User Experience program at the Tribune Corp. and global IT consulting for Fortune 500 clients. He held a research faculty position at MIT and he is a contributing author of the Encyclopedia of Human-Computer Interaction and other major scientific journals. His earlier work on advanced HCI has received wide recognition in the popular media including the New York Times and the team's nomination for invention of the year by Discover Magazine. Hosted by Yahoo! (Santa Monica). Parking: Parking in the Yahoo! Center is expensive, so carpooling and street parking is recommended. If you do park in the Yahoo! Hosted by Microsoft. Food & beverages sponsored by speakTECH 7:00: Eat/socialize 7:30: Program What Makes a Design Seem Intuitive? Everyone wants an "intuitive" interface: the users, the designers, and the content publishers. But building them is hard. User Interface Engineering's recent research has given insight into why it's hard and how to get past major obstacles. To build an "intuitive" interface, a designer has to do two things: (1) Take complete advantage of what the user already knows, so what they see is completely familiar to them and (2) make the act of learning anything new completely imperceptible to the user. It turns out, if the interface requires the user to realize they are learning something, the "intuitive" label disappears instantly. In this talk, Jared will show: - How users need both tool knowledge and domain knowledge to complete their tasks - How simple problems with designs can cause big problems for users - What successful teams are doing to create experiences that delight Jared will show examples from Microsoft Word, MSN, Google Talk, Flickr, Avis, and many more. --------------- Note: NO PARKING VALIDATION AT THIS SITE, and parking in the building is very expensive!! Buses and Red Line serve the area (Red Line Civic Center, Pershing Square, and 7th/Metro are all nearby). Parking options map (PDF). The area has moderate amounts of on-street parking (roughly $4/hr but some is free after 8 PM). There are garages in several area buildings and two nearby lots: most offer discounted evening rates if you enter after 5 or 6 PM. Joe's Auto Parks has two lots (Lots 220 and 240) located on the corner of Hope and Gen Thaddeus Kosciuszko Way (lot address: 220 S. Hope Los Angeles CA 90071). You will need to pay a parking fee of $12.00 for the day or $6 after 6 pm. Check or cash only. Microsoft is not affiliated in any way with any of these parking vendors. Microsoft is in no way liable for any negligence or any damage that may be incurred by attendees who utilize these parking facilities.

Topic: Deliverables Poster Session For those of you who've been to the IA Summit in past years, this session will be familiar to you. This is an entire session dedicated to sharing a variety of deliverables for people to browse through, discuss and be inspired by. It's a chance to see how others are communicating design to their coworkers and clients. Pick up some tips and tricks that your peers are using or participate to get feedback on your deliverables! We need some presenters for this one, so if you've got something from a previous project --an interesting wireframe, a creative new way of showing a sitemap, or a funky diagram that really sells the concept -- share it with us! We're looking for any type of deliverables ranging from personas to wireframes to conceptual models to user research reports - the whole spectrum of outputs from your IA sweat and tears. If you're interested, contact Coco Chalfant at cocochalfant at gmail.com. Host: Yahoo! Santa Monica
Food & Beverages provided by Yahoo! Location:
Yahoo! Santa Monica 2450 Broadway (Trivia: Sometimes referred to as building E) First floor - Training room Santa Monica, CA 90404 http://tinyurl.com/6 85q5g
Parking info: Unfortunately, Yahoo! can't offer parking validation. Therefore, we recommend street parking, primarily along Broadway. The block of the Yahoo! Center and westward is a commercial street, so there should be plenty of space available after 6 pm. However, the parking garage is available to the public, but it'll cost $29, which is obviously quite expensive. When:
Thursday/7.24.08/7:0 0 pm RSVP limit: (65)
